3 Post-Labor Day Essential Tips

Call me crazy, but I kind of love the summer-is-over, back-to-the-grind kind of feeling that comes after Labor Day. Summer heat and summer travel destroys my attention span, and I get excited to buckle back in and feel productive and grounded.

And you know what? This is also great news for your dating life.

We see it every year—summer travel comes to an end, and everyone picks their dating apps back up and gets around to finally scheduling dates.

I know the energy in the air has been anti-dating apps recently. We’ve been feeling that in a big way at SMP too (which is why we’ve been focusing on ways to meet singles IRL, and even specific activity ideas in 6 major cities). But!! That does not mean everyone has thrown the apps to the wayside! In fact quite the opposite—I’ve had quite a few clients recently tell me they were pleasantly surprised by the number of “normal”-seeming people on the apps they were matching, chatting, and going out with.

Dating apps, I promise, are still an incredibly widely used and incredibly effective way of meeting people and going on dates. And now that it’s September, there are going to be more people on them than at any time in the last several months.

Here are my 3 fall dating tips for how to hit the ground running on dating apps this season:

1. REFRESH YOUR PROFILE

Change out a photo (or maybe even 2!) and consider using a different prompt this time around. If your profile visually has new life to it, you’ll feel a whole new burst of energy using it.

2. DON’T BURN YOURSELF OUT

If something feels weird or off in their profile, in how they’re messaging with you, or in how they’re responding to you on or after a date, don’t expel all your energy trying to work around it. Go for the path of least resistance. Trying to muscle through will burn you out on dating apps, and then that negative energy will shine through to your matches (trust me). My most successful clients are the ones who treat dating apps with positivity, curiosity, and a spirit of adventure!

3. BORING IS GOOD

Here’s who to swipe left on: people who actively have red flags in their profiles. Here’s who to swipe right on: people who do not have red flags in their profiles. Duh, right? But here’s where people get tripped up: a generic profile is not a red flag. A boring profile is not a red flag. A profile that’s “fine” but doesn’t make your heart leap in your chest is not a red flag. Now, this is NOT me saying “go out with the ugly guy/girl” or “you should settle”—not at all! But I can’t tell you how often I’ve heard “their profile was boring, but in person they were kind/attentive/trustworthy/engaging/fill-in-the-blank-wonderful-adjective.” People who play it safe on their profiles are often the best people.

Happy Dating!
