Why every woman needs a Breton striped shirt in her wardrobe repertoire

I’ve been a fan of the horizontal striped shirt for decades. It started when I was working on a photo shoot and pulled a Saint James traditional Breton striped one and fell in love. This was circa 2004. It was boxy and had a dropped shoulder and I wore that thing into the ground (to be fair, I think it lasted me about 10 years!).

I then fell in love with an APC one (very similar to this) while at Liberty in London in 2018 and have subsequently worn and re-worn that one over and over (and hopefully have another few years left).

What I love about a striped shirt is the versatility— so much so that I currently own 4 different versions of them (🙈).

It’s perfect as a weekend staple with jeans and sneakers or a flat shoe (pics 1-3). You could even add a kerchief for a little extra like in pic #3.

They go with literally any color of jeans or pants: white, light denim, dark denim, black, grey, off black, khakis, joggers, plus a track pant (pic #4) thrown in for good measure!

But I especially love mine worn under a blazer or jacket, as you can see in pics 5 through 9. I wear mine probably too much — and these pics only represent the last 5-6 years— but in my opinion, you can never wear stripes too much!

I would love to see how you style yours. And if you don’t currently own one or need to upgrade, here are my suggestions….

Saint James version without a dropped shoulder:

APC similar to the one I have but with buttons on the shoulder:

This one includes plus sizes up to 4XL:

Love the oversized style of these three options which are great as an alternative to a sweatshirt (but wouldn’t be good for layering under a blazer):

The different color stripes on the sleeves make this one unique (and the price is great too!):

Two straightforward Breton-style options:
