How is dating like the Golden Globes?
The Golden Globe nominees were announced this week, so it’s officially awards season. Hollywood is rolling out the red carpets, the critics are weighing in, and everyone’s arguing over which films are overrated and which ones are secretly brilliant.
Which got me thinking: this is exactly how dating apps work.
A profile? That’s a movie trailer.
A very carefully edited, 30-second highlight reel designed to make you lean in and think, I’d watch that.
But you can’t judge the whole movie from the trailer. And you definitely can’t get the full story from text messages.
Trailers show you the best lighting, the best angle, the funniest line. Dating profiles do the same. That doesn’t make them deceptive — it just makes them incomplete.
And yet, so many people get stuck in “texting season.” Weeks of messages. Inside jokes with someone you’ve never heard laugh. A false sense of chemistry created entirely by typing.
Here’s the truth: you don’t really know someone until you’re sitting across from them.
You don’t know how they treat the waiter.
You don’t know how easy the conversation feels.
You don’t know if their energy actually feels good to you.
That only happens in real life. Not on a screen.
The best daters don’t wait for the “perfect” texting rhythm. They treat messages like they are: a bridge to something real. If you’re enjoying the back-and-forth, move it forward. Suggest coffee. A walk. A drink. Something simple.
You’re not being pushy — you’re being intentional.
Think of it this way: if you only watch the trailer but skip the movie, you’ll miss the plot twists, the quiet moments, the chemistry between characters.
Dating deserves the same chance.
Stop rewatching the trailer. Go see the movie.
