I have two new words for you to live and date by:
Date. Vanilla.
And before you think that that means I’m telling you to settle, please read on!
Dating Vanilla is absolutely not going for a boring person. It’s swiping right on “boring” profiles.
I personally, deeply know the allure of getting started on a dating app and feeling drawn to the people with the flashy profiles.
When I started online dating after my 18-year marriage ended, I was like “Here we go! Bring on the tall, hot men who have it all!”
I cannot tell you how insecure chasing these kinds of guys made me feel. I felt like I was always second guessing myself, anxious, and begging for crumbs. It sucked.
Then I met the man with the bland profile. Just basic facts about himself. He had 5 very so-so photos. And 1 photo that was pretty good.
No fireworks on our first few dates, just a kind, consistent human who kept me curious. And he kept showing me he was real and wanted something real.
By date four, chemistry snapped into place. It became clear that he’s anything but vanilla—even though you’d never guess it from his profile!
So no, Date Vanilla isn’t about settling—it’s about choosing the person who shows up, listens, follows through, and makes you feel safe. The stuff that real, lasting love is built on.
The guys (and gals) with the showy profiles are the ones who will ghost you.
