The Perks of Google Voice for Dating
You know how much I champion getting off the apps and going on that date (see Number 5).
But I’m also realistic. It doesn’t always feel great to give a stranger your personal phone number.
I can’t tell you how many clients have asked me for help setting up a Google Voice phone number for dating purposes. It’s both an incredible resource and incredibly easy to set up!
People can call and text you on your Google number, but it’s not traceable back to you. It doesn’t even have to share your real area code. Perfect if you want to set up a phone date with a match before meeting in person, but sharing your real number feels a little too close to home.
Here’s all you have to do!
- Download Google Voice onto your phone from the App Store—available for iPhone here and Android here. You can also set this up from your computer on the Google Voice website and make calls and texts through your laptop.
- Log in with your Google account. You do need a Google account in order to use Google Voice (if you’re a GMail user, you’ll log in with your GMail address). If you don’t have one, you can follow these instructions to set one up.
- Allow notifications, so you get an alert when you receive a call or text
- Select a city from the list
- Claim an available phone number
- Enter your personal phone number to be sent a code to confirm
- Enter the code
- You’re ready to go! From the home screen, you can make or receive calls (in the Calls tab on the bottom left) and send or receive text messages (Messages tab second from the right).
