Why Long Distance Relationships Shouldn’t Freak You Out
I want to talk about long distance relationships.
Don’t stop reading! I’m living proof that they’re not as scary as you think.
I often hear from clients, “I don’t want to have to drive 45 minutes to be able to see someone.” Or worse: “I’m looking for someone who lives within walking distance from me” (granted that’s in NYC… but still!).
First of all, you are totally limiting yourself! It’s great if you find out your soulmate’s been living around the corner, but the odds of that are slim. I’d be willing to bet most of us would tolerate driving for 45 minutes (or much more) for someone amazing!
Second, you just never know: the person may even be open to moving to where you are. For those of you at or near retirement age, a change of scenery is enticing! And we’re in a new era of remote and flexible work — being tied to your neighborhood, or even city or state, just isn’t as prevalent anymore.
My partner Yoav and I have been together for 6.5 years. Many of you may not know that we spent the first 2.5 in a long distance relationship. He traveled a ton for work, and at the time his kids were younger, so every 10 days he was spending 4 days in DC. I could sometimes go down to visit, but I had young kids of my own. We saw each other probably about one week per month in total. We FaceTimed A LOT and savored every moment we did have together. Was it ideal? No. But was it prohibitive? Not at all. We made it work, and every single day has been worth it.
It’s so much easier to make long distance relationships work in this modern age of dating. And at some point, maybe one of you will be open to moving 🙂 My point is, keep your net wide because you never know… your perfect match could live a little further than expected. Pull out your dating apps and increase your radius right now!
