Don’t Use This Hinge & Bumble Feature

When I work one-on-one with clients, there’s a feature on Hinge and Bumble that I tell each client not to use. Today, I’m going to share it with all of you, and it’s going to make you more efficient and effective than ever on the apps.

Ready?

You know these tabs on your apps? The tab is called “Standouts” on Hinge and “For You” on Bumble. These are the people the app is telling you that you’re going to be the most compatible with.

A list of the people the “algorithm” is telling me have been curated specifically for me based on my swiping preferences? AMAZING! Why would I spend time swiping in the main queue if the best people for me are here?

Well, there are two problems.

Issue #1

The first is that there’s a paywall. These select few “most compatible” people refresh every 24 hours, and you only have one free like to send per week in this tab. It’s a smart way that the apps have gamified the system, creating a scarcity mindset for you as a user. If these are the best people, and you have to decide each day whether to send your one precious like rather than selecting from everyone at the end of the week, you’re going to want to pay to be able to send more likes, lest you miss out on your perfect match.

On Bumble, you’re able to send unlimited likes on the people in this tab once you upgrade to Premium; but on Hinge, even if you’re paying for Premium, you still have to separately buy “roses” to send to the folks in the “Standouts” tab. Tricky!

Issue #2

Now here’s the second – and much more important – issue:

These people are not curated just for you. And they’re not worth your time.

Hinge and Bumble are showing you the most liked profiles that meet your basic criteria. That’s it. And we can make some assumptions from there.

If a profile is getting a ton of likes, it’s because the person is very classically attractive. They’re not a niche type of attractive, they’re everyone’s type. Frankly (and I mean no offense to hot people!!), this is already a bit of a red flag to me. Super hot people (again, not all!) can tend towards exhibiting an air of entitlement. If they’re getting a lot of likes on the apps, they think they’re hot shit, and that they can keep swiping until they find an equally hot person. If you’re not supermodel level hot yourself, the odds are not in your favor.

Another reason not to waste your time here? These people are getting so many likes, you’re going to get completely lost in the shuffle, I guarantee it. I know from experience that we only have so many minutes in us to spend on the apps each day. Make those minutes count reaching out to people who are actually down to give you the time of day!

Stick to your main queues and the “Likes You” tabs, and you’re going to have so much more luck and fun on the apps.

Happy Dating!
