What happens when height is a dealbreaker

What would you do if someone said “Sorry, but you can’t be my friend. You’re not tall enough.”

I can only assume (and hope, frankly!) that you’d be confused, offended, and peeved.

Because what? That’s a crazy reason not to be friends with someone. Who cares how tall you are?

Ladies seeking men, you know where I’m going with this.

I get that the patriarchy has taught us that a man can only be Prince Charming if he’s over 6 feet. But omg, how old fashioned is that!

Height is just a number, and not a very indicative one at that. How tall you appear is so about how you carry yourself.

I can’t count the number of times someone has mentioned how tall they are, and everyone has gone “Huh! Always thought you were taller!”

I just don’t buy it when someone says they’re only attracted to men of a certain height. For one thing, attraction grows — just look at me and Yoav (it took 4 dates), my coach Katherine and her fiancé (it took 5 dates), or ask around to friends in relationships.

For another, I don’t know about you, but I am not minding gazing at Tom Cruise in all the ads for the new Mission Impossible movie. And he’s 5’7”! And was married to Nicole Kidman, who’s 5’11”!

Let’s look at in another way, too:

According to the U.S. census, here’s the breakdown of the male population by height:

  • ~4% of men are 5’5″
  • ~5% of men are 5’6″
  • ~10% of men are 5’7”
  • ~10% of men are 5’8”
  • ~10% of men are 5’9”
  • ~14% of men are 5’10”.

So every time you move your height restrictions up an inch, on average you’re losing another 10% of available men out there. And if you set your height restrictions to 5’11” or taller, you’re losing well over half of the male population.

If you’re serious about finding a partner, you’re only going to sabotage yourself by continuing to narrow your pool by including height on dating apps.

So let’s leave height judgments in the past, shall we? It’ll do your dating life some good 🙂
